Our Rituals

Prarthana ritual icon

Prarthana

(Prayer)

The wedding rituals commence with prayers to the Almighty for blessings. Suraj, Divya, and their families pray to Lord Ganesha (the remover of obstacles), performing a Ganapati Puja , in the presence of a priest conducting the ceremony to bless the couple.

Maalai Matral ritual icon

Maalai Matral

(Exchange of garlands)

The exchange of garlands signifies that Divya has selected Suraj as the man she wants to marry. This is followed by tying "Kankana", a sacred thread tied to Divya's and Suraj's wrists. This thread, blessed with vedic mantras by the priest, offering protection and preventing negative energy near the couple.

Oonjal ritual icon

Oonjal

(Sitting on the swing)

Oonjal is a ritual where the marrying couple sits and rides forth and back. They are surrounded by ladies who sing songs praising the couple (Laali). The swinging chains are a representation of the unbreakable bond with the divine, and the swaying motion illustrates the ebb and flow of life.

Kanyadaanam ritual icon

Kanyadaanam

(Giving away the bride)

It is an important ritual in Hindu wedding ceremonies during which, Divya's father places Divya's hand on the hands of the Suraj which allegorically signifies that he is handing over the responsibilities of his daughter to him.

Thaalikettu ritual icon

Thaalikettu

(Tying the sacred thread)

The Thalikettu marks the most significant moment in a Hindu wedding, symbolizing the union of two souls. Suraj will tie the thaali (sacred thread) around Divya's neck, signifying their eternal bond and the start of their journey as life partners.

Sapthapadi ritual icon

Sapthapadi

(7 steps around the sacred fire)

Holding hands, the bride and groom walk seven steps together : To nourish each other | To grow together in strength | To preserve wealth | To share our joys & sorrows | To care for parents & children | To be together forever | To remain friends lifelong
